WE ARE SISTERHOOD

Joining Sisterhood is a great way for women new to Temple Israel to meet the women in Sisterhood and form lasting friendships. Our members are made up of young and experienced, professionals and stay-at-home moms, single, married, and widowed, introvert and extroverts, who form a common bond, enjoy the easy camaraderie, and share Reform Jewish values.

WE ARE FRIENDS

We enjoy being together, we care for one another, and we learn from each other. Our year of programs or events include many opportunities to socialize with one another—a key element of being in Sisterhood. We also help one another through times of difficulty and loss. Such steadfast support is the backbone of lasting friendships.

WE ARE DEVOTEES

We are a vital, dedicated, and active part of our Temple Israel family. We oversee the Temple kitchen and its needs. Jewish items for the home are supplied through the Judaica shop that Sisterhood maintains. When needed, we have purchased for Temple such items as the benches under the portico by the entrance, durable dining-room chairs for the multipurpose room, and a rolling cart for the flat-screen TV. In the past we organized and led the congregation’s primary annual fundraiser, the corned-beef sandwich deli lunch sale.

WE ARE COMMUNITY

In recent years, we have donated funds to our local Jewish organizations: West Lafayette Federation of Temple Youth (WeLFTY), Temple Israel Cemetery Fund, Temple Fund for Jewish Youth Activities, Lafayette Jewish Community Religious School (LJCRS), and Purdue Hillel Foundation. We also support nonprofits in our Greater Lafayette community whose missions we support because of our dedication to the Jewish commitment to “tikkun olam”. Sisterhood has donated to the YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program, Cary Home for Children, Food Finders Food Bank, Riggs Community Health Center, Home with Hope Addiction Rehabilitation Program, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

WE ARE WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM

The Sisterhood of Temple Israel is a local women’s group for Temple Israel congregants and other Jewish women in Greater Lafayette. We are affiliated with the national organization, Women of Reform Judaism. We are one Sisterhood among many hundreds in the United States and the world. Our 30-some members are among the thousands of women who have joined a Sisterhood or a Jewish women’s group worldwide. View WRJ’s new video,  which shows you the many reasons why we are happy to be among the Women of Reform Judaism.

Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) is a network of Jewish women working together to empower women and communities worldwide through the bonds of sisterhood, spirituality, and social justice. WRJ, founded in 1913, is the women’s affiliate of the Union for Reform Judaism, the central body of Reform Judaism in North America. For more information about WRJ, please visit its website at www.wrj.org.
