Temple Israel offers a comprehensive sequence of educational programs for our youth. The Temple offers a Hebrew program, in addition to contributing to a community-wide Sunday school. A variety of educational activities, including the confirmation program, are available for teenagers.
Here, at Temple Israel, we regard the bar/bat mitzvah as just one benchmark in the lifelong learning of Judaism. Therefore we ask our bar/bat mitzvah students to commit to continuing their Jewish education. Youth are expected to complete the ninth grade at LJCRS and study toward their confirmation. Students attend the confirmation program during tenth and eleventh grade, meeting weekly with the rabbi.
The confirmation program prepares youth to incorporate Jewish learning and traditions into their decision-making process and into their lives. That is, students formulate an understanding of Judaism and the Jewish community. They consider the application of Jewish values to their lives currently, while in college, and beyond.
High-school youth are encouraged to get involved in the Jewish community, Individuals may work as aides at LJCRS and in the Hebrew program. They may participate in our temple youth group (WeLFTY). This group, which they lead, offers social activities throughout the school year under the supervision of a young-adult leader. Youth are invited to attend adult-education classes, along with other members of the congregation.
