Our Community
One of the strongest benefits of being a part of our Temple family is the camraraderie we feel when we are with others. Socializing and sharing bonds - young and old - are an important part of being Jewish. Our congregation also reaches out to the broader Jewish community through its connections with the Hillel Foundation on the Purdue University campus, The Department of Jewish Studies at Purdue, B'nai Brith, Hadassah, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Lafayette. Social action programs for those in need in the Greater Lafayette area, such as collecting items for the Women's Shelter and the Food Pantry, promote mitzvot among our members.
Temple Israel's families create a warm, personal atmosphere. We offer an array of educational and social programs, celebrating Jewish learning and Jewish culture. Special programs give adult members a chance to socialize, learn and enjoy Jewish life. Women of Reform Judaism (Sisterhood) welcomes participation in its programs. Young people enjoy the activities of our Temple youth group (WeLFTY), including participation in regional meetings that provide them with opportunities to interact with other Jewish young people.
Becoming a member requires a financial commitment and a time commitment.
The financial commitment is from a fair-share scale that ranges from 1.5% for families with less than $20,000 in gross income up to 2.8% for those whose income is greater than $100,000. We also ask members who have been here for three years to contribute to the Building Fund. The Temple Israel Board of Directors is analyzing that Fund at this time.
The time commitment requires (1) participation in bringing and serving food for a Shabbat Oneg once a year, as well as (2) serving on a committee for planning and implementing another event during the year, such as the congregational Chanukah party or the congregational seder. We call this program "folkmensch."
